Growing up in Hawaii I never really felt a career in art was possible. This is my first locally published book and very near and dear to my heart. I am thankful for each and every project that comes my way but this book was the first that I've actually seen in stores so it's extra exciting!
Read MoreI've been a little obsessed with Matryoshkas (Russian nesting dolls) for a long time. My mom has a pretty large one (about 12 inches tall) and I remember having so much fun taking them all apart (it had quite a bit nesting in there).
This past summer I participated in the 100 Day Project on Instagram where I attempted to create a new piece every day for 100 days (I say attempted because I think I took 105 days to complete). My theme was cats and during that project I created these cute little kitty matryoshka characters. I recently went back and retooled them a little and created a pattern collection.
Read MoreI love cute! I think that's why I decided to focus my illustration work towards the children's market. It's wonderful that there is so much variety nowadays for kids and adults alike that feature cute and cuddly characters!
This week's featured artist's all have delightfully cute styles!
Read MoreI actually am juggling a few job related things (that I sadly cannot share) so I thought I'd share a personal project I'll be working on as time becomes available. I have always been attracted to surface and pattern design. Even when I was little, I believe I was unconciously drawn to print and pattern because I really enjoyed looking at lovely packaging, stationery and greeting cards. I used to hoard my favorite cards I received on birthdays and holidays in a box. I still do keep our kids cards now.
This personal project I'm creating is a surface design collection. I've taken a few Skillshare classes (list below) to help me learn and understand what it takes to get into surface design.

I've finally fleshed out all the elements in Adobe Illustrator (CS6) and have moved everything into Photoshop. I really enjoy working in Photoshop because it's closer to working traditionally.
Read MoreToday is a quick post of a new portfolio piece I'm working on. I wanted to do something a little different, more fanciful than my last portfolio piece. Here is an initial rough sketch of my idea.
I wanted to do a piece that is more geared towards boys. I love creating fun characters so I had fun designing these scurvy sea dogs!
Read MoreOk, sorry, technically it's Thursday but this is still a WIP post. I had been asked by my agent to create a new piece for my portfolio and the deadline was tight. I had a few other sketches for development but I felt that this scene was something I could complete in a couple days.
Read MoreI really enjoy finding wonderful art via Pinterest. I try my best to always pin to the post source (if from a blog) or directly from an artist's site. It's often frustrating when you want to learn more about a piece and you find that the pinner pinned to the blog home and not necessarily the post that had the original image/content you are looking for. This week's Net Picks showcase a few wonderfully illustrated animal characters. I always find it amazing how people can infuse so much character and style into animals in their illustrations!
