Net Picks - Fun House designs

I really love everything about animation but I feel that the design that goes into great animation is often overlooked. Now not all of these are necessarily background concepts but I chose them because they are great environment designs. 20150427-01

  1. Mary Blair - Scene from Alice in Wonderland. Mary Blair is one of my all time favorite artists of all time. Her use of color is amazing! Probably most famously, she was a concept artist for Disney for such feature animated films including, Cinderella, Peter Pan and Alice in Wonderland. I have an older version of this book that I found really wonderful: Magic Color Flair: The World of Mary Blair.
  2. Jeremiah Alcorn - Jeremiah Alcorn is an animation artist (my original dream job!). His work is so versatile! He does character design, background design, layouts and story boarding. His work has so much personality (love the characters). Please check out his blog Alcorn Studios!
  3. Justin Parpan - I originally discovered Justin's work by geeking out and looking through the credits on one of the new Mickey Mouse shorts to see who worked on the beautiful backgrounds (yup I do this). The example above is from another Disney animated tv show (not a Mickey short) called Star vs. The Forces of Evil which looks super cute! I love the colors and textures that Justin uses in his work.
  4. Anine Bosenberg -  Anine is a wonderful illustrator. I just loved the simplicity of her tree house drawing. The play on positive and negative shapes is really lovely. Although this isn't animation art, I could totally see this little treehouse in a cartoon somewhere. Anine also has a blog that has lots of her beautiful illustrations.
